Scientists Create First 3D Map of Clitoral Nerves

Dutch researchers have created a detailed 3D map of the clitoral nerve network, disproving previous anatomical understandings. This discovery will help improve surgical outcomes and prevent female sexual dysfunction.

Scientists Create First 3D Map of Clitoral Nerves

A team of researchers from the University Medical Center Amsterdam in the Netherlands has created the first-ever 3D map of the complete network of nerves in the clitoris. Using high-energy X-rays to create 3D scans, the scientists revealed the path of the five branched, complex, and tree-like nerves that run through the clitoris with unprecedented detail. This study challenges previous anatomical knowledge, as it shows that the clitoral dorsal nerve does not gradually thin out but remains strong until the very end. This breakthrough is crucial for improving surgical outcomes, such as reconstructive surgery after female genital mutilation, cancer treatment, gender reassignment surgery, and aesthetic genital procedures like labiaplasty. It also deepens the understanding of female sexual pleasure and could help prevent sexual dysfunction in women undergoing pelvic surgeries. "This is the first 3D map of the nerves inside the glans of the clitoris," stated Ju Young Lee, the leader of the project. The team used two donated pelvic bones to create a detailed model showing how the nerves extend to the pubic mound, labia majora, and labia minora.
