Innovative Bicycle Research to Enhance Safety

Dutch researcher Holger Caesar develops a unique bicycle with laser sensors to collect traffic data that could save lives and improve cyclist safety.

Innovative Bicycle Research to Enhance Safety

Dutch researcher Holger Sizer patrols the streets among automobiles on a bicycle, equipped with laser and scanning sensors, collecting data on road traffic. His goal is to create information that may save lives in the future. Sizer himself states: 'We are recording the behavior of cyclists, and we hope that this data will find some application in the future.'

The ultimate aim is to help cyclists avoid obstacles, including the creation of bicycles with built-in stabilization systems or even training of automated transport means to avoid collisions with bicycles. Sizer points out that 'for cars, it’s all quite simple: they turn left, right or move straight ahead. Meanwhile, it is very difficult to predict the behavior of cyclists. Possibly, the collected data could be used to create applications that warn drivers when one of the cyclists makes an unexpected movement.'
