Former press secretary of President Harry Roque announced the issuance of a request for asylum in the Netherlands. He stated that he cannot return to the Philippines due to concern for the safety of former President Rodrigo Duterte. Roque emphasized that this decision was made after discussions regarding his future, should the Philippines file a request for his extradition. He also reported that he encountered legal issues back home, particularly related to dealings with alleged criminals, including the company Pogo Lucky South 99 Corp. He is also threatened with arrest in connection with charges in pretrial concerning unsubstantiated representation of his situation. Roque noted that under this law he will be protected from deportation and judicial proceedings for illegal entry while his asylum application is being considered.
In his statement, Roque indicated that he intends to formally file a request for asylum. He pointed out that after receiving his asylum, he has the right to non-refoulement, which essentially establishes a legal principle protecting individuals from being sent back to a country where they may face danger. This international legal principle guarantees that a person cannot be deported while their asylum application is under consideration. He confirmed that he will comply with all necessary procedures for filing an asylum request, adding that he is prepared to undergo the required steps for obtaining refugee status and temporary residency.
